Description
This program draws on current research in psychology as well as the wisdom of philosophical and spiritual traditions to explore the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual processes associated with the transition from mid-life to later-life.
The life-stages from infancy to mid-life are focused on action, productivity, acquisition, creativity and interaction. These are the ‘hero’ years of our lives, of immersion in the external world with a focus on material outcomes. The transition from mid-adulthood to later-adulthood encourages a reorientation: from doing to being, from material to spirit, from action to reflection and from knowledge to understanding. These are the years of the ‘elder’.
Each session will focus on a particular theme, such as: exploring the attitudes and habits towards ageing that influence the way we think, act and feel about our lives and ourselves; transitioning from hero to elder, from doing to being, from material to spiritual, from action to reflection, from knowing to understanding; understanding the motivations and processes associated with the changing levels of consciousness as we progress through the stages of life; developing mindfulness and the capacity for insight through meditation; reflecting on grief and loss as we manage the changes in relationships, expectations, roles, physical functions and our sense of mortality; discovering ways to be in deeper relationship to ourselves, refine our sense of self- compassion, humour and creative spark.
This program is facilitated by Bree van de Zuidwind, a registered psychologist with a Masters Degree in Professional Psychology and Gary Green, the Director of the Culture of Peace Institute in Perth.
